Through all crises
After a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week that started with news of a loss and ended with a howling snowstorm, I’m not sure what to write here. Monday feels like half a lifetime ago. I have been low and the hurt is still very near. But I can still knit myself forward, one stitch at a time, “with hope and confidence, through all crises,” as the Zimmermann Doctrine demands. Since I’m keeping my words close, here are pictures of the Christmas knitting I can safely show:
Those last are Clara Parkes’s Maine Morning Mitts, or rather, my approximation of Maine Morning Mitts, since I don’t actually have the pattern. I’m pretty sure I made the thumbs too big. The yarn is some Bouton d’Or Aida wool that’s been skulking in the stash this past age. Soft, springy, brightly marled. These go to a relative for Mr. G’s family exchange, along with some good Portland coffee and a few other goodies.
I’ll be back, and more loquacious, in a few days. With a little gift for my readers, if all turns out well!

Sarah,
It’s so very difficult to suffer a personal loss, even more so near the holidays, when joy should be the prevailing emotion, and instead, the holiday will forevermore mark the anniversary of a loss and be a reminder of things that can no longer be. You and yours are in my heart and prayers, and I look forward to when the pain eases for you, and you can once again find joy in your day and this season.

Sarah, I hope everything is OK. I’m sorry to hear that it’s been a bad week and that there has been a loss…. You’re in my thoughts. In the meantime, the knitting looks beautiful. The recipients of both the FLS and the mitts are lucky people indeed.

Dear Sarah,
I’m so, so sorry to hear about your loss. My mum and I were just talking this morning about today being the 30th anniversary of my grandmother’s (mum’s mum) death. 30 years and my mum got choked up. Loss is loss, whether 30 years ago or just recently. It becomes a room mate you never wanted but learn to live with. But as EZ said “knit on…” my friend. Your mittens are beautiful and I’d love to be on the receiving end of that FLS. I pray you and your family have a peaceful holiday.

I’m so sorry. I think it was Jane Austen who said that time does much to heal one’s heart…I’m sure she would have agreed that having your knitting handy is a good thing, too : )
