Oh, for goodness’ sake!

Published on Tuesday February 3rd, 2009

(Let us first note that this is probably the only time you’ll see me dangle an apostrophe off the end of a non-plural noun. I believe that singular nouns ending in ‘s,’ though minorities, are just as deserving of the possessive ‘s construction as their kin. This phrase is clearly meant to be possessive–for the sake of goodness–and yet I just can’t bring myself to be fussy enough to write “for goodness’s sake.” /personal nerdfest)

Who on earth does a girl have to knit for to find a copy of the Jan/Feb Piecework Magazine? I’ve been all over Portland looking for it. The yarn shops sold out before I realized it was Annual Knitting Issue time. Powell’s let me down on two fronts (a once-in-a-blue-moon occurrence), since they’d also sold all their copies of Rabbit, Run, the title I need for my next book club meeting. My favorite giant fabric/yarn/craft accoutrement store, Mill End, doesn’t carry it. Border’s offered me scores of craft magazines including New Zealand Quilter, but not Piecework. I mean, not to disparage what I’m sure is a worthy publication from our southern cousins, but New Zealand Quilter? When all I want is a peep at some Nancy Bush gloves and an Alice Starmore fair isle cap?

Update: Twisted got more copies in! Thanks to Kate for the tip-off in the comments! I now have the magazine in my possession. I also have a peculiar urge to cast on a pair of conjoined socks…

Sarah – if you are looking for this years copy, check out Knit Divas in St. Helens? She has lots of copies and she’s also willing to mail if you don’t want to drive all the way over there.

Did you try Rich’s Cigar Shop or Barnes and Noble?

YAY New Zealand… I live in New Zealand and somehow found your blog, and randomly read it from time to time. Guess the patriot in me felt the need to express my excitement!

  5. Pam R Comment Says:

Try Barnes & Noble – that’s where I have to go in SF.

  6. Jane Comment Says:

Oh no! I always assumed it was so easy for you guys over there to get hold of those magazines…I’ve just ordered a copy from Webs, who say they have it in stock, so if you don’t have any success locally you could always resort to mail order. I can’t wait to receive my copy, hope you get hold of one soon!

“Oh, for goodness’ sake” is correct, according to the Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors. The punctuation police are saying “Let’s move it along; nothing to see here.”

I got my copy at my Barnes & Noble, though it was the last copy they had. And I had to dig around the magazines to find it. But you can always ask them to order you a copy.

Weird – because the same thing happened to me north of you. I live in Vancouver, BC and have my regular places to get various crafty publications – and wanted the Piecework issue for the same reasons.
Alas, I have been to 3 different Chapters (which I understand are like Barnes & Noble south of the 49th parallel) as well as 2 other large book and magazine stores and one store that *only* carries magazines…someone has swiped all the copies…
Since I’m headed to Madrona next week, I resolved to wait and get one there.
Guess it was really popular…still looking…
(And, may I say, your commitment to proper grammar is most laudable!)

    We have it at Twisted!

If you haven’t gotten one yet, they should have it at my local book store (it’s wear I got the knitting issue last year) and I will be there this weekend. I will happily toss one in the mail for you.
