Burning questions

Inquiring minds want to know: When doing stranded colorwork, is it really necessary to bring the new color over the old one every time? Or am I wasting valuable knitting time dangling my half-a-mitten after every round to untwist the port and mooskit?

i think this has something to do with dominant colors in fair isle. eunny was just talking about it so go on over to her blog and take a looksee 🙂

I’m no expert on this, but when I do stranded colorwork, I try to always bring the pattern color under the background color, and the background color over the pattern color, so they don’t wind up being twisted at the end of the round. But like gleek said, I’m pretty sure Eunny was just talking about it, so that would be a good resource.

I don’t ever do “weaving” of colors unless I’m joining a new one or working in an end as I go. I always have the same color come up from below and the same one on top, and as long as I’m careful, I don’t have to unwind at the end of the round. Lots of debate on which color to carry “up” from below (some people call it “in front” if you are doing 2 handed). I usually do the darker one unless the pattern specifically calls for another way.

imho, yes, it is necessary. it will greatly, greatly improve your tension to be consistent about this. in my experience, the color taken from the bottom (i believe, i might have this reversed!) will always “pop” out of the pattern a little bit more, so i usually pull my ‘patterny’ color on the bottom and the bg color on top (play around with this – i might be reversing them mentally!). if you do it incorrectly, narrow parts of the pattern stitches get swallowed a bit by the background color. ‘hope this is helpful, but i’m sure eunny has something much more edifying to say about it! 🙂

How is life different after losing 100 lbs.? Brooke counts the ways, laughing:
She can sit down on the floor to lead a reading workshop with her first-graders,
and then pop right back up without groaning! Dressing is an enjoyable exercise in self-expression instead of a dispiriting,
doomed attempt to camouflage fat. And her social life has changed, too.
She has actually learned to turn someone down without hurting his feelings. Because today,
when a guy shows interest, odds are he wants to ask out Brooke not one of her friends!
