Prairie Camisole hits the town

Prairie Camisole: finito! But what do you do when the weather finally turns Portlandish again on Seaming Day? This is how we wear camisoles in Stumptown, I guess:

Prairie camisole, adapted from Prairie Tunic by Veronik Avery in Interweave Knits Spring 2006

Three balls + a scrap of a fourth Jaeger Siena 4-Ply

US size 3 needles

As you can see, I opted to do away with the racerback — although if the warm weather is truly gone and I have to wear it over a long-sleeved shirt from now on, it won’t even matter that I don’t own a racerback bra.  Ah well, there’s always next summer.  I’m pleased with the fit.  Once again I underestimated how quickly my hips narrow to my waist, but it doesn’t much matter.

Prairie Cami made her debut when I went to meet Michelle (yes, Spiders, Michelle is alive and well!) at Close Knit, a delightful yarn store I was visiting for the first time.  She drew enthusiastic admiration from Sally the Owner, which, combined with Sally’s beautiful and well-stocked shop, made me love Sally instantly.  I drooled over a lot of things in Close Knit, but Michelle and I were both particularly arrested by a sample of that short-sleeved coin-patterned top from this year’s spring/summer VK (design #6), worked with a simple crew neckline instead of the keyhole collar, in chocolate brown RYC Luxury Cotton.  It was very fetching indeed.  Hmmm…projects for next year!  I think I’m pretty much done knitting tanks, but a romantic vintagey short-sleeved top with a slender waist could be right up my alley.

Zimmermania newsflash: The Elizabeth Zimmermann knitalong will kick off September 23rd! Email me or leave a comment if you’d like to join!

love the prairie cami!! it turned out great! and i also love how you’re layering it. i think that it’s the perfect fall item 🙂

i may want to be involved in zimmermania depending on if i can find something small to knit, like socks or a hat or something. my time has been so limited lately especially since i get tired so quick! any suggestions?

I love your cami and how you layered it! The weather sure did get cold all of a sudden. I want the sun back!

I love stumbling across fellow Portlanders’ blogs. Silly me, I thought I knew of all of them. 🙂

The Prairie Cami looks great – I love it over the t-shirt. Excellent layering!

Can’t wait for Zimmermania to start! I think I’ll see what sort of EZ title selection there is over at Knit-A-Way tomorrow!

Both the Prairie Cami and you look beautiful! I love the color, and it looks fabulous with that incredibly awesome hat. I like the pattern better without the racerback. That pattern always makes me wistful, since the first cami I knit, from Sarah Dallas’ Vintage Knits, came out huge and floppy. The Prairie Cami seems to fit so beautifully.

I’m becoming more and more excited about Zimmermania. I had no idea what to knit, but then I showed the husband the purple sweater at Brooklyn Tweed, and he fell hard for it. I think we have a winner! Thanks so much for starting this, as it’s given me the kick I needed to actually get an EZ book.

The cami is great, even over a long sleeve shirt! I’m contemplating Zimmermania, I’m just hoping her book arrives in my hot little hands before the 23rd!

I love the camisole! I just happened upon your lovely site while wandering through a stream of other Zimmerman-inspired people. Zimmermania is such a tempting proposition…but there is so much to make already… I must also tell you that you make me miss the NW. I used to live in Seattle and I long to wear layers, sweaters and boots again. The desert keeps me in cotton. Thanks for the inspired camisole idea.

    Congratulations, Sarah! Prairie is beautiful!

I’m contemplating Zimmermania as well. Just need to survey all that I’ve got on the needles and all the gifts I want to knit beore the holidays and see what I’ve got room for. This is a great idea though- I’ll definitely join in the fun if I can swing it!

the prairie cami looks right at home layered like that, and very jaunty with the hat. i think racer backs are bad news, so sounds like a good call. glad you found a yarn store that you like and glad you got to see michelle!

  18. Craptina Comment Says:
